Religion – Santa Marta

As with most of the country, Santa Marta is predominantly catholic. Nevertheless, the Kogi people and other indigenous tribes have done much to hold onto their beliefs based on honoring and paying tribute to Aluna , The Great Mother.

In fact, Colombian presidents, before their inauguration, travel to the Sierra Nevada to be blessed by the mamos – the chiefs that represent the Kankuamo, Arhuaca, Kogui and Wiwa tribes. This is a traditional pilgrimage made by presidents that’s part folklore, part public relations, and a lot of beliefs rooted in the tribes and Colombian ancesters.
