Santa Marta Environment

Santa Marta, several years ago, hit an environmental crises with the coal dust that covered the city, palm trees, even contaminating the bay with the coal shipments leaving from the port.

In 2014, the Environmental Protection Association with the Attorney General of Colombia and regional government entities of Santa Marta began a surveillance process for carbon pollution in Santa Marta and is working to better environmental conditions and pollution in the area, starting with strengthening the monitoring of air and water quality to be able to denounce bad and illegal practices by multinational corporations who don’t abide by legal boundaries set up to protect the region.

Santa Marta continues to struggle with this process; however, things have improved because of the vigilance of local, regional, national and international entities.
