Santa Marta has almost 500,000 inhabitants, 30,000 of whom belong to one of four indigenous tribes: Kogi, Arhuaco, Kankuamo and Wiwa. It was declared A Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 because of its cultural and environmental diversity.
